Are your gums swollen and painful? Swollen gums are a common oral health problem that can have several different causes. Here, we’ll discuss some of the most common reasons behind your gum inflammation.

What Causes Swollen Gums?

Swollen gums can be caused by:

  1. Malnutrition – Deficiencies in vitamin C, vitamin B6, and vitamin A can lead to mouth sores and inflammation.
  2. Poor Oral Hygiene – Swollen gums may indicate gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease. Gum disease is the result of plaque buildup due to inadequate brushing and flossing.
  3. Certain Medications – Gum swelling and overgrowth can be a side effect of some medications, such as phenytoin, cyclosporin, and calcium channel blockers used to treat high blood pressure.
  4. Allergic Reaction – Have you recently changed brands of toothpaste or mouthwash? There may be a new ingredient you are allergic to.

How to Heal Swollen Gums

  • To obtain all the necessary vitamins and minerals for good oral health, consume a balanced diet that includes a variety of whole grains, lean protein, fish, dairy products, vegetables, and fruits (as your dietary restrictions allow, while taking supplements as needed).
  • Limit your consumption of highly processed carbohydrates, candy, chips, crackers, and soda.
  • Drink plenty of water. Limit your consumption of alcohol and beverages with added sugar.
  • Chew sugar-free gum for at least 20 minutes after eating.
  • Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste twice a day for two minutes each time and floss at least once a day.
  • Avoid using all tobacco products.
