You’ve heard that brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time is essential for optimal oral health, right? But did you know that sometimes it’s better to wait to brush your teeth? Here, we’ll talk about how long you should wait after eating to brush your teeth.

How Long After Eating Is It OK to Brush Your Teeth?

Since you’ve always been told it’s best to keep your mouth as free of food particles and bacteria as you can, you might think that brushing immediately after you’ve eaten is a good idea. However, if you eat or drink something that is acidic and/or sugary, we typically recommend that you wait at least 30 minutes before brushing. Acids and sugar lead to temporarily softened enamel, so waiting to brush your teeth gives your teeth’s protective outer layer time to re-harden. Otherwise, you can eventually damage your enamel, which increases your risk of tooth decay and sensitivity. Acidic foods and drinks you particularly want to watch out for include carbonated drinks, citrus, alcohol, and tomato-based products.

How Do I Clean My Mouth After Eating?

If you will be consuming foods or drinks that are high in acid, carbohydrates, and/or sugars, consider brushing your teeth beforehand for an added boost of protection. During and after eating, be sure to drink plenty of water. This will help wash away the acid and sugar in your mouth. Then, use a water flosser, which utilizes a stream of pressured water to remove debris from between your teeth and under your gumline. Additionally, if you do not have issues with your jaw, chew sugar-free gum for at least 20 minutes after eating, which has been shown to promote the production of saliva and to reduce the occurrence of cavities. These activities help remove food particles and harmful oral bacteria from your mouth without damaging your enamel. Then, once your enamel has settled after 30-60 minutes, you can safely brush your teeth!
