5 Fun Facts About Teeth!

Most adult humans have 32 teeth: incisors, canines, premolars and molars that help us talk, sing, chew, bite and so much more. With a little care, your teeth can remain healthy for a lifetime. Dr. Brigman and the rest of our team at Helotes Family Dentistry are proud provide quality dental care to our patients and their families. Today, we want to share five fun facts about our favorite topic: teeth!

  1. Toothbrushing Is Ancient History
  2. Although toothbrushes with bristles were invented in China in 1498, ancient humans have been using other objects, like twigs, to clean their teeth since 3000 BC.

  3. Your Smile Is Unique
  4. Your smile isn’t just unique because it belongs to you – it’s one of a kind because each of your teeth has its own unique tooth print! How’s that for original?

  5. Milk Might Save a Tooth
  6. Not only does the calcium in milk help keep teeth strong, milk can also help save a tooth if you get one knocked out! If your tooth has been knocked out, your first step should be to try to gently place it back in its socket and seek medical attention immediately. If you are unable to place it back in its socket, placing a tooth in a glass of milk can increase the chances that it can be saved.

  7. Your Saliva Could Fill 2 Swimming Pools
  8. Over your lifetime, you’ll produce around 25,000 quarts of saliva. Saliva is one of your body’s first lines of defense – it helps keep your teeth clean, break down bacteria, and keeps your mouth from drying out.

  9. Battle of the Sexes?
  10. Believe it or not, the average woman smiles 62 times a day, while the average man smiles around 8 times a day. If you’ve been hiding your smile because you’re embarrassed about your teeth, we’d love to talk about our cosmetic dentistry services with you!
