Charcoal toothpaste has become very popular in recent years. It’s popping up all over the dental care market and promoting various benefits, most often teeth whitening. But is it effective, or even safe? In this post, we’ll give you the answers.

Is Charcoal Toothpaste Beneficial?

We are all striving for a brighter, whiter smile. And charcoal toothpaste products claim to give us just that. These products use activated charcoal to whiten your teeth in what is said to be a gentle and natural manner. While it has been proven effective, there are a few risks to be aware of. Mainly, charcoal is known to be abrasive, meaning it could pose a risk to your enamel. And as with all charcoal toothpaste, you don’t want to swallow it. So we wouldn’t recommend this product for kids. While we would recommend a toothpaste with more proven cavity-fighting power, which is something charcoal toothpaste does not have, the best rule of thumb is to make sure you’re choosing a product with the American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Acceptance. Then you can be sure the product is safe and effective to use.

Whitening Alternatives to Charcoal Toothpaste

Charcoal toothpaste is not the only product available that offers to give you a whiter smile. Here at Helotes Family Dentistry, we offer two options for professional teeth whitening. While whitening toothpaste and other drugstore products can help boost your smile’s brightness, nothing works quite as well as professional whitening. Choose from one-visit whitening or custom take-home trays, and you’ll have a sparkling smile in no time.
