How Long Does Invisalign Take to Work?

Trio of photos of a smiling woman straightening her teeth with Invisalign

Here at Helotes Family Dentistry, we offer both Invisalign® and traditional braces. If our doctors determine that Invisalign is the right choice, you’re probably wondering when you’ll get your brand-new smile. What’s the process like? How long does Invisalign take to work?

What Is Invisalign?

First off, what makes Invisalign unique? They are clear trays you wear almost like a mouthguard. Each tray is custom-fit. We use them to treat teeth with gaps, as well as crowded teeth, overbites, underbites, and crossbites. The smooth plastic pushes your teeth into the correct alignment. This is different than metal braces, which pull your teeth. When eating, drinking, and cleaning your teeth, you remove your clear aligners.

How Long Does Invisalign Take?

Every few weeks, you switch out the aligner set for the next one in the series. Depending on your situation, you could notice your teeth becoming straighter after only a set or two. On average, a total Invisalign treatment takes between 12-18 months. Depending on your teeth, it could take less or more time. Small gaps will resolve faster than complex alignment issues.

It’s important to wear your Invisalign trays for the recommended 22 hours every day. After eating and drinking, don’t forget to give the aligners a rinse and put them back in your mouth! Making sure to wear them for 22 hours a day ensures your teeth get straighter as quickly as possible. After a consultation, we can give you a better idea of how long your treatment will take to work.
