How Do One-Visit Crowns Work?

Cute, smiling lady with dark curly hair is pleased with her same-day dental crown.

A crown is a cover that your dentist places over your entire tooth when you have extensive decay or damage. The shell protects the rest of your tooth from further damage. Generally, a crown is a two-appointment procedure – one appointment for a fitting and a second for the placement. However, with same-day crowns available at Helotes Family Dentistry, the entire procedure can be completed during one visit, which is more convenient for you!

Intraoral Camera

In preparation for your same-day crown, we will place a small camera in your mouth. This allows our professional team to see an enlarged picture of your tooth on a computer screen. From this, the technology creates an accurate 3-D image of your damaged tooth so the crown will fit properly.

CEREC Machine

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. The CEREC machine utilizes computer-aided design or computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology. It uses the 3D image of your tooth taken by the intraoral camera to generate your restoration. The CEREC machine mills the crown on-site and it’s ready to place on your tooth immediately.

Placing Your Crown

Once the machine mills your crown, our team will make sure that the fit is comfortable and that you’re satisfied with the results before we permanently place it. We will inject a numbing agent into the area, so you don’t feel any pain. Next we’ll place cement on your tooth and position the crown over the damaged portion of your tooth. The dental cement will continue to harden and any sensitivity you feel will gradually decrease over time. Generally, you’ll have minimal pain during your recovery from a same-day crown.
