Do I Need a Deep Cleaning?

Have you been putting off your routine cleanings and exams? Don’t fret, you are definitely not alone! Patients sometimes skip their biannual cleanings. However, visiting the dentist for regular dental cleanings and exams is one of the best lines of defense against tooth decay and gum disease! So you’ve missed a few appointments, what’s next? Our goal at Helotes Family Dentistry is to get your oral health back on track and ensure that no dental issues have come to the surface since your last visit.

Assess Your Breath

Breath is often a telltale sign of whether or not you need a deep cleaning. If you’ve noticed that your breath still doesn’t smell fresh even after brushing your teeth, you are probably overdue for a deep cleaning. Once bacteria and tartar have built up on the teeth, they cannot be easily removed with at-home brushing. Plaque and tartar have to be professionally removed.

Gum Health

If your gums are sensitive and swollen, or they bleed a lot when you brush your teeth, you may have an onset of gum disease. One of the main treatments for the early stages of gingivitis is scaling and root planing, which is essentially a deep cleaning. Your dental hygienist will scrape off any built-up tartar and thoroughly clean beneath the gums. If necessary, we will recontour the gum line to encourage the gums to properly reattach to the teeth. Helotes Family Dentistry offers comprehensive periodontal therapy for all stages of gum disease.

Deep Cleaning

During your dental examination, our team will determine whether it is necessary to schedule you for deep cleaning. Compared to regular dental cleanings, deep cleanings can remove more severe plaque and bacteria buildup from the teeth and gums. We allow your hygienist more time for this type of cleaning. Sometimes mild anesthesia is recommended to make the procedure more comfortable. The results are worth it though because stopping gum disease in its early stages can greatly improve your oral health.
